To give new life to a wooden piece of furniture, a few but accurate moves are enough! Whether it’s a bedside table, a table or a chest of drawers, the first obstacle you will have to come across is stripping, a delicate operation that allows you to remove all the layers of varnish or paint that, over time, have been applied. This way you can restore the wood to its natural beauty and prepare your furniture for a new paint job.
Stripping a wooden piece of furniture is an operation that requires patience and a certain amount of dexterity to avoid causing damage to the surface being treated. Before proceeding with the restoration of a piece of furniture, it is necessary to make a careful analysis of the more or less evident damages to understand the working margin and the actions necessary to remedy it. Once you have identified the areas that appear more fragile and sensitive, you will already know how to treat them in the stripping phase and in subsequent repairs.
NECESSARY TO PAINT A FURNITURE
If you need to remove paint from furniture, first make sure you are working safely. So bring latex gloves, workwear (or an apron) and a mask to protect your eyes. If you don’t have an outdoor seat available, make sure you can work in a ventilated room with adequate space to be able to move around and avoid excessive inhalation of strong-smelling chemical solvents.
PAINTING GEL
The most effective and fastest method to remove paint from a piece of furniture involves the use of chemical paint removers, able to reach the wood, removing all the layers of varnish and paint present on the surface of the furniture.
To simplify the work, we recommend using a gel paint remover, particularly suitable for working vertically as it offers the advantage of not dripping. Before starting, remove any metal parts and disassemble the cabinet as much as possible (drawers, shelves, handles, etc.). If the furniture to be stripped has no legs, place it on trestles to work better.
Using a medium-sized flat brush, preferably with nylon bristles, generously apply the paint stripper starting from the bottom of the cabinet. If you are not yet practical, we advise you to start from the most hidden parts to get a better grip, without the risk of creating damage.
Within a few minutes (5 to 15) the paint will begin to wrinkle and can be removed using a spatula. Be careful to scrape it always following the direction of the wood fibers and remember to be delicate to avoid scratching the surface. We recommend that you remove small portions of the surface at a time because when the paint stripper begins to dry it becomes difficult to remove.
After this first phase of work, it is time to take care of the most difficult areas to treat, those with curves, carvings, or any moldings. Using the spatula is more difficult and therefore you will have to remove the paint stripper with a soft brass brush or steel wool pads. If you notice spots where the paint is more difficult to remove, you’ll need to go back later, applying a second and, if necessary, a third coat of paint stripper.
